Accessible gorilla Trekking: Elderly tourist in a Gorilla Sedan Chair in Volcanoes national park in Rwanda

In Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, we’ve put in place the gorilla sedan chair. This service is specifically designed specifically for our tourists who may have mobility issues or difficulty navigating the often challenging terrain of the park.

What is a Gorilla Sedan Chair?

The gorilla sedan chair is essentially a modified stretcher that resembles a chair with long handles. It is equipped with a comfortable seat and safety harnesses to ensure the passenger’s security during the trek.

The chair is carried by our team of four to six porters who are trained and experienced in maneuvering through the rugged forest paths. These porters rotate to ensure the journey is smooth and to prevent exhaustion.

Our Sedan chair is designed to provide a comfortable and stable ride, allowing the passenger to focus on the experience rather than the physical challenges of the trek. The porters are attentive and ensure that the passenger feels safe at all times.

Accessible gorilla trekking: African Helicopter in Bwindi impenetrable national park

Accessible gorilla trekking: African helicopter which is a stretcher used to carry disabled and elderly into Bwindi impenetrable forest to watch gorillas

In Uganda’s  Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the African Helicopter is available for those who need assistance.

This is quite similar to the one in Rwanda and actually this idea was initiated here in Bwindi due to tough terrain and few people even those with minor disabilities couldn’t try to make it in the impenetrable jungle.

What is the African Helicopter?

The African Helicopter is a stretcher-like device with a seat, secured with straps and handles. This innovative solution helps transport individuals who cannot hike the steep and uneven terrain of the parks.

Similar to Rwanda, this stretcher is carried by a group of porters who are skilled in navigating the difficult forest trails. The porters coordinate to carry the stretcher smoothly, ensuring the safety and comfort of the passenger.

We often use our African Helicopter particularly for our tourists who have significant mobility impairments or health conditions that prevent them from hiking. It allows them to reach the gorilla families without the physical strain.
