3 Days Uganda Chimpanzee Trekking Tour

Chimpanzee trekking may get much less hype in the travel media  compared to gorilla trekking, 3 Days Uganda Chimpanzee Trekking it’s arguably one of the most amazing adventure experiences while in Africa. Tracking our closest relative through the African jungle is in fact one of the world’s most thrilling wildlife encounters. Although there are around 300,000 chimpanzees left in the equatorial forests of Africa, observing them in their natural habitat is a rare treat.

Kibale Forest national park  in Uganda also known as the primate capital, is home to around 1500 chimpanzees living in 13 communities. Of these, various groups have been successfully habituated; some for scientific study and others, such as the Kanyanchu group, are used for tracking.

The Kanyanchu group, made up of more than 120 individuals, is led by an alpha male named Totti (after an Italian footballer) who took the top job in 2016 after a two-year battle with the previous alpha, Magezi. Visits to the group take place in the mornings and afternoons and typically last 3-4 hours with up to one hour spent with the chimps. The cost of the tracking permit is $200 per person for a normal trek and this can either be a morning or afternoon trek. Both options provide plenty of time to find the chimps and enjoy a thrilling hour in their company.

Day1: Arrival & Transfer to Kibale Forest

On arrival at Entebbe airport, you will be met and welcomed by our company representative together with the driver / guide and embark on your journey to Kibale forest national park – a place known as “the primate capital of the world” driving through Mityana road.

The drive takes 4 and half hours and you visit Amabere Ganyinamwiru stalagmites site and caves with a waterfall in Fort Portal as well as a visit to the crater lakes with a great view of the Rwenzori mountain foothills. Dinner and overnight at the hotel

Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale forest

After breakfast, report to the park headquarters for briefing and proceed for chimpanzee tracking near Kanyanchu. This can take you half a day. There are other primates in the area like the golden monkey, L’Hoest monkey, baboons, white and black colobus monkeys, grey checked mangabey, red colobus, blue monkeys and pottos. Other animals include forest elephants unique from the common type, giant forest hogs and a striking tree species.

Enjoy Lunch and later go for a guided nature walk to Bigodi wetland, a good site for birders. The Great Blue Turaco and Papyrus Gonolek can easily be marked among the other 137 bird species. There is also an array of butterfly species.

Day3: Back to Entebbe and Departure

Have breakfast and embark on your journey back to Entebbe with lunch en-route and drop-off at Entebbe airport for your onward flight.
