Akagera National Park is located in eastern Rwanda along the border with Tanzania. It is the country’s only protected area of savannah habitat, and the park provides an important habitat for a wide range of wildlife. It is named after the Kagera River, the largest headwater of the Nile.

Akagera National Park was established in 1934 to protect the rhinoceroses and big-game that inhabited the area. The park is known for its spectacular birdlife, and is home to over 500 bird species, including fish eagles, papyrus gonoleks, and red-faced barbets.

The vegetation within the park visitor interest is composed primarily of acacia and eucalyptus, with occasional patches of riverine forest. Mammals such as Hippopotamuses, elephants, buffalo, and re-introduced lions can also be spotted throughout the park.

Akagera National Park provides an important refuge for wildlife, as it serves as a stepping stone for species in the face of environmental and habitat destruction. Due to deforestation and habitat fragmentation, the park is seen as a crucial link for species that may not be able to survive in their natural habitats.
