Detailed Itinerary of 1 Day Mgahinga Gorilla Trekking
Early Morning: Pick-Up and Transfer to Uganda
Your adventure begins at 4:00 AM with a prompt pick-up from your hotel in Kigali by our experienced driver-guide. You’ll travel northward through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside, passing close to Volcanoes National Park, before crossing the Cyanika border into Uganda. Enjoy sweeping views of the Virunga Volcanoes along the way.
Upon arrival at Ntebeko Visitor Centre in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, you’ll receive a pre-trek briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers. This session includes guidelines on gorilla trekking etiquette and safety measures. You’ll then be grouped with other trekkers and assigned to the Nyakagezi gorilla family, the only habituated group in the park.
Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla Park
Accompanied by expert ranger guides, you’ll set off into the bamboo-covered slopes and montane forests of Mgahinga in search of the gorillas. Unlike the more challenging treks in Bwindi, Mgahinga’s gorilla tracking is often shorter and more manageable—yet no less magical. The Nyakagezi group is well-known for its playful juveniles, strong silverbacks, and relatively calm nature.
Once you find the gorillas, you’ll spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Take in their sheer presence, watch them interact, and capture the moment (without flash photography). It’s a deeply moving experience you will carry with you forever.
Afternoon: Return Trek and Travel Back to Kigali
After your trek, return to the park headquarters to receive your gorilla trekking certificate and take a short break. Then, embark on your return journey to Kigali, arriving back at your hotel or drop-off point in the early evening.
