Detailed Itinerary
Pick-Up and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your adventure begins with a very early pick-up (around 4:30–5:00 AM) from your hotel or Kigali Airport. Meet your driver-guide and begin the picturesque 2.5-hour drive northwest to Ruhengeri (Musanze), the gateway town to Volcanoes National Park.
Enjoy breathtaking views of rolling hills, traditional Rwandan villages, and the towering peaks of the Virunga Volcanoes along the way.
Morning: Briefing and Gorilla Trekking
Upon arrival at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters, you’ll receive a detailed briefing from park rangers on the gorilla trekking rules, safety precautions, and allocation to a habituated gorilla family. Trek assignments depend on factors like your fitness level and group size.
You’ll then begin your trek into the misty rainforest. The duration of the trek varies depending on the gorillas’ location—it can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours. The forest can be wet, muddy, and steep, but the reward is worth every step.
Once you locate the gorillas, you are allowed one magical hour with them. Observe them feed, play, and interact in their natural habitat—an awe-inspiring, life-changing experience. Cameras are allowed, but no flash photography is permitted.
Afternoon: Return and Drive Back to Kigali
After your time with the gorillas, trek back to the base where your guide will be waiting. You’ll begin your journey back to Kigali, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening. Drop-off will be at your hotel or the airport, depending on your preference.
