Self-Drive Uganda Safari Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe – Welcome to Uganda
Upon your arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you’ll be warmly welcomed by one of our experienced representatives, who will hand over your 4×4 vehicle and offer a brief orientation to begin your 12-day self-drive Uganda safari adventure.
Depending on your arrival time, you may explore Entebbe’s attractions such as the Botanical Gardens or Uganda Wildlife Education Centre for a relaxed introduction to Uganda’s flora and fauna.
Enjoy a peaceful evening as you settle into your accommodation.

Day 2: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park via Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
After an early breakfast, begin your scenic drive northwest towards Murchison Falls National Park. Along the way, make a stop at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a guided on-foot rhino tracking experience—this is the only place in Uganda where you can see wild rhinos.
Afterward, enjoy lunch at Amuka Safari Lodge near the sanctuary or in Masindi Town, depending on your timing. Continue your journey into the park, stopping at the Top of the Falls to witness the mighty Nile squeezing through a 7-meter gorge and plunging with thunderous force.
Arrive at your lodge in the evening and unwind as you take in the sights and sounds of Uganda’s largest national park.

Day 3: Morning Game Drive & Afternoon Boat Cruise
Start your day with an early breakfast at the lodge before setting out on a morning game drive on the northern bank of the River Nile. This safari drive offers excellent chances to spot elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, lions, leopards, hartebeest, and a variety of savannah birds in their natural habitat.
After the game drive, return to the lodge to relax and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, head out for a scenic boat cruise along the Nile towards the base of the majestic Murchison Falls. This leisurely cruise brings you up close to large pods of hippos, basking Nile crocodiles, and a spectacular array of water birds.
Return to the lodge for dinner and a restful overnight stay.

Day 4: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park
After breakfast, begin your scenic drive south to Kibale Forest National Park, renowned as the primate capital of East Africa. The journey offers beautiful countryside views, tea plantations, and traditional villages along the way.
Kibale is home to 13 primate species, including over 1,500 chimpanzees, making it one of the best destinations in Africa for primate viewing.
Upon arrival, check in at your preferred lodge for a relaxing evening and dinner.

Day 5: Chimpanzee Tracking & Bigodi Wetland Walk
Start your day with an early breakfast before heading to the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre for a briefing. You’ll then embark on a thrilling chimpanzee tracking experience, which typically lasts 2 to 3 hours. Along the way, you may also encounter black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, vibrant butterflies, and a variety of forest birds.
Once you locate the chimpanzees, you’ll spend one unforgettable hour observing their behavior up close—an incredible wildlife encounter.
Return to the lodge for lunch, then head out for an afternoon walk through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run project rich in birdlife and primates. After the walk, return to your lodge for a well-deserved evening rest.

Day 6: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park & Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise
After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park, renowned for its diverse ecosystems and incredible wildlife. As you travel along the Kasenyi plains and the Mweya Peninsula, keep your eyes open for African elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, and various antelope species. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of the Rwenzori Mountain ranges, a stunning backdrop to your journey.
Arrive at the lodge for lunch and some rest. In the afternoon, head out for a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, a natural waterway connecting Lake Edward and Lake George. This relaxing cruise offers excellent opportunities to see hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and a variety of waterbirds up close along the shoreline.

Day 7: Morning Game Drive & Transfer to Ishasha Sector
Enjoy an early breakfast before setting off in your 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof for an exciting morning game drive through Queen Elizabeth National Park. Traverse the open savannah and track down iconic wildlife such as African elephants, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, buffaloes, and possibly lions as they hunt or bask in the morning sun.
After a relaxed lunch, continue south to the Ishasha sector, a remote and less-traveled region of the park famed for its rare tree-climbing lions. As you drive through, keep an eye out for these majestic predators lounging in fig trees, as well as topis, buffaloes, and other savannah dwellers.

Day 8: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
After an early breakfast, begin your scenic journey southwest to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The drive takes you through the picturesque Kigezi Highlands, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Africa,” where you’ll marvel at rolling green hills and terraced landscapes.
Arrive in Bwindi by late afternoon and check in to your lodge to relax and prepare for the unforgettable gorilla trekking experience the next day.

Day 9: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After an early breakfast, head to the designated park headquarters for a pre-trek briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. You’ll be assigned to one of Bwindi’s four main trailheads—Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo—each home to habituated gorilla families.
Begin your once-in-a-lifetime trek through dense rainforest, guided by expert trackers. Along the way, keep an eye out for forest birds, monkeys, and other wildlife. Once you locate the gorillas, you’ll spend a magical hour observing and photographing them in their natural habitat.
The trek can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours or more, depending on the location of the gorilla family, terrain, and your pace.

Day 10: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park
After breakfast, set off for Lake Mburo National Park. Enjoy a scenic drive through southwestern Uganda, with a stop at the Igongo Cultural Centre for a delicious lunch and an optional cultural experience. Continue to the park and check in at your lodge.
In the late afternoon, choose between a boat ride on Lake Mburo, a guided nature walk, or a game drive to spot zebras, impalas, elands, and other wildlife.

Day 11: Morning Game Drive & Transfer to Jinja via the Equator
Begin your day with an early morning game drive in Lake Mburo National Park, where you’ll have the chance to spot early risers like zebras, impalas, elands, and other savannah wildlife. After your safari adventure, embark on a scenic drive to Jinja, East Africa’s adventure capital.
En route, enjoy a stop at the Uganda Equator along the Masaka–Mbarara highway for memorable photos and a chance to shop for local crafts and souvenirs. Continue your journey and arrive in Jinja in time to unwind by the Nile River.
