3 Days Virunga National Park Gorilla Trekking Experience in Democratic Republic of Congo

Though three days may seem brief, this adventure is intense, immersive, and beyond expectations. You will explore Virunga National Park, Africa’s oldest national park, gazetted in 1925. As part of the Congo Basin forests, the second-largest rainforest after the Amazon, Virunga boasts unmatched biodiversity, dramatic landscapes, and a conservation legacy that is both inspiring and extraordinary.

Your journey includes tracking endangered mountain gorillas — creatures that share 98% of human DNA — witnessing their complex social behavior, and encountering other primates, including chimpanzees. Bird lovers will delight in spotting over 400 species of birds, while adventure seekers can marvel at the world’s most active volcano, Mount Nyiragongo.

Day 1: Arrival and Drive to Virunga National Park

Your adventure begins with a warm welcome from your Marvel Gorilla Adventure representative at Kigali International Airport. You’ll be briefed on the trip itinerary, safety protocols, and essential tips to maximize your experience.

If time permits, enjoy a half-day city tour of Kigali, recognized as one of the cleanest cities in the world. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a solemn tribute to the victims of 1994, and gain insight into Rwanda’s history and resilience.

After lunch, embark on a 4–5 hour drive to Virunga National Park via the Gisenyi border into the Democratic Republic of Congo. Along the way, enjoy scenic views of the Virunga mountain slopes, lush plantations, and rural landscapes.

Arrive at your lodge in the evening, settle in, and enjoy dinner followed by an overnight stay, preparing for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Village Walk

Wake up early with a fresh cup of coffee or tea before heading to either the Bukima or Mikeno patrol post. Here, you will meet your trained Virunga guides for a thorough briefing on gorilla trekking rules, safety, and etiquette, ensuring a responsible and low-impact encounter.

The gorilla trek takes place in the dense rainforest and can last 2–6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location, your pace, and terrain conditions. Trek through verdant landscapes filled with exotic flora and listen to the sounds of the jungle as your guides expertly navigate toward the gorilla family.

Once the gorillas are located, you will have one full hour to observe them in their natural habitat. Witness their playful interactions, watch young gorillas explore, and marvel at the imposing presence of the silverback — an unforgettable experience connecting you with our closest relatives.

After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch before setting off on a village walk. Explore the local community, observing villagers going about their daily lives, participating in traditional activities, and enjoying cultural performances and storytelling. The walk offers insight into local life, blending education, entertainment, and cultural immersion.

Return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and a cozy campfire, sharing stories and reflections on the day’s unforgettable experiences. Retire for the night, resting for your journey home.

Day 3: Return to Kigali

After breakfast at the lodge, begin your return drive to Kigali. Along the way, make a stop in Goma, a city famously affected by past volcanic eruptions. Spend approximately 30 minutes exploring the town, learning about its history, and observing the resilience of its residents.

Continue the journey to Kigali International Airport for your departure, marking the conclusion of an extraordinary adventure that combines wildlife encounters, cultural insights, and breathtaking landscapes.
