Day 1: Kigali – Golden Monkey Trekking in Volcanoes National Park & Ellen DeGeneres Campus Visit
Your 2 Days Golden Monkey Trek begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Kigali (around 4:30–5:00 AM), heading north through Rwanda’s breathtaking countryside toward Volcanoes National Park (approx. 2.5 hours’ drive). Arrive at the Kinigi Park Headquarters in time for the golden monkey trekking briefing at 7:00 AM. These rare and playful primates are found only in the Virunga Mountains and are a delight to observe. After a short drive to the trailhead, begin your guided trek into the bamboo forests where troops of golden monkeys leap through the canopy and forage in the undergrowth. The trek usually takes 2–4 hours, and you’ll spend a magical hour in their presence once found.
After the trek, enjoy a relaxed lunch in Musanze town. After an early breakfast, you’ll set out for a hike to the Dian Fossey Tomb and Karisoke Research Site, nestled between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke. The guided trek takes about 3–4 hours round trip, ascending through dense forest and offering opportunities to see birds, primates, and beautiful forest flora. At the top, you’ll reach the historic grave site of Dian Fossey, the famed American primatologist whose work in the 1960s–80s was instrumental in protecting mountain gorillas.
