Western lowland gorillas live in social groups led by a dominant silverback, similar to other gorilla subspecies. However, their group structure tends to be smaller and more fluid. A typical group may consist of five to eight individuals, including females and their offspring, although group sizes can vary.

Birth intervals typically range from three to four years, meaning population growth is gradual even under favorable conditions. In the wild, western lowland gorillas can live up to 35 to 40 years, although this lifespan is often shortened by environmental pressures and human-related threats.
